In this article I will write about those ancient Indian habits that are not only eco friendly but also healthy in nature and can never be outdated. I will not only answer which old Indian habits you need to follow but will also answer why do those habits should be a part of your daily routine.

1. A gratitude prayer before having food


Food is a life giving energy, a gift from the whole universe – the earth, the sky, and much hard work. So, thanking your food not only leads you to more present and enjoying experience but also helps us appreciate the efforts that go into growing, harvesting, and preparing each ingredient. 2. Eating food with hands

3. Eating food by sitting cross-legged on the floor


Sitting on the floor while having your food is still a culture of many households and should be yours too. Sitting on the floor while eating aids ingestion as repeated action of moving your body slightly forward to eat and come back to original position can trigger your abdominal muscles, which increases the secretion of stomach acids and allows food to digest faster.


Sitting cross legged is an excellent position for doing Meditation or breathing exercises, which increases the flow of oxygen in the body. It also improve your body posture as it straightens the spine and relaxes the shoulder muscles.



4. Vajrasana after having food


Sitting in Vajrasana for 5 minutes just after meal improve your digestion. Generally, any kind of exercise or yoga is should not be done immediately after having food. But it is good to perform Vajrasana after meals since it helps indigestion. It also helps you to get rid of gas and acidity and ensures better absorption of nutrients by the body.

5. Mindful eating


Mindful eating means noticing the colours, smells, flavours, and textures of your food. It also means getting rid of distractions like television or reading or working on your computer.

6. Early dinner


According to a research published in the Endocrine Society’s Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism, eating your dinner late makes you gain more weight and increases high blood sugar levels, regardless if the meal is the same that you would have eaten earlier. Our pancreas is not formulated to secrete digestive enzymes late in the night and this fact can be understood by noting how you wake up feeling after a late dinner – puffy, bloated, heavy and acidic because the body was unable to finish the process of digestion. You can have late-night parties but eat your food early.




7. Use leaf plates to eat your food


It’s unarguable that leaf plates are natural gift to us – being 100% natural and eco-friendly. Leaf plates do not offer any threats to your health or for the environment. They can be burnt or disposed of incredibly easily, or can be feed by to cows.



8. Absorb morning sunlight


Vitamin D from the sunlight at the time of sunrise right before entering the rays onto the earth is good for your hair, skin, body and whatnot. So, keep your all windows open especially in the morning. The pure sunlight rays will enter and will sterilise your rooms. Also you will get natural light and air. 9. Keep your shoe rack out of your home


Bringing shoes at home can also bring tons of outside bacteria home, and also if your walking space at your home is restricted by shoes or clutter created by shoes, it can interfere with good energies entering the house. However, you can spare a pair of sleepers to wear at home.



10. Clean yourself right after you come home from work or anything


While out of home for work or shopping or anything you come in contact with many things and people of which you can absorb energy that can be positive or negative. You must take care of that you don’t bring that outside energy at home. So clean yourself as soon as you come home.



11. Use earthenware instead of steel or aluminium to cook food


Not that ancient, I have seen my grandmother cooking food in clay pots many a times. However, the place has been taken now by fancy steel and aluminium utensils.


Still, in every household of India, there can be found at least one clay pot. It has it’s own benefits as it is made of totally natural ingredients, using natural method (fire).

The clay in the pot allows moisture and heat to distribute through the food that further helps in conserving nutrients. These utensils retaining complete nutrition of food.




These are the ancient Indian habits that are incredibly easy to build and follow daily. Though there are many others I can write but those take time to perform and can seem hard at first glance. Anyway go with building these old habits and keep looking for more.
