How can you use your emotions positively on your spiritual path?

Emotional feelings are related to earthly or we say worldly happiness or sadness while spiritual feelings are related to unbounded happiness. This is the main and the most important difference people will tell you between Spiritual and Emotional feelings.


How can you use your emotions positively on your spiritual path?


But this is not true. This can not be. I don’t agree that a spiritual person feels nothing but happiness. Emotions whether happiness or sadness, pain or joy, anger or love and all are the integrated part of our life and that’s what makes us truly human.



Then from where this idea of emotions being earthly related matter came from? This idea came because an average human being doesn’t know what to do with his or her emotions. They don’t know how to deal with their emotional part. They feel it a kind of shortcoming within them that makes them vulnerable in front of others. And so they try to suppress the emotions they don’t like (sorrow, anxiety) and want to experience some they like (calmness, joy). This is a natural tendency to avoid whatever we don’t like. And that’s what we are doing wrong that is preferring emotions.




I have said in many blogs that no feeling or emotion is negative – when it comes to feeling there is nothing wrong. People are not getting it. And they are just avoiding some emotions and attaching to others. Both ways are wrong. Read How Negative Emotions are Helpful.



Consider this.

You are feeling bad and then feeling bad about feeling It’s a serious problem. When you know you are feeling bad, you scare. Anxiety rapidly takes over and this allows the flow of energy through the full spectrum of emotions naturally.



Consider the other way, feeling good about a feeling. It is the reverse of the same problem. A strong feeling like anger gives a sense of power to some people and so they get attached to it. It is more serious than the first one.




So what can be done? How to use these emotions positively?


So, how to learn to be less attached to some emotions and avers to others? Suppression of emotions is not good for mental health as we discussed in our previous blog How to Master our Emotions. And so one thing I am again emphasizing here is that we are not going to learn to suppress our emotions but to use them positively in our spiritual journey.



To learn to use your emotions in your spiritual growth the very first thing is to recognise that something needs to be cured. Pay close attention to your emotions – which emotions you like and which you try to avoid. Only after knowing your emotional profile, you will be able to find the solution. Then use that solution a regular, disciplined practice that will lead you to progress and maturity. And regular practise is spirituality. Know, How can you start your Spiritual Journey.





We know that a human is all about emotions – just everything involves emotions in human lives. And by knowing What is Spirituality we know that spiritual journey requires a deepening knowledge of self – one’s understanding of his or her emotional profile. A spiritual person is always in touch with one’s feelings. And so here we can connect both – Spirituality and Emotions.



In Spirituality, we observe the emotions and instead of judging them as good or bad, we accept them. So to use your emotions positively you need to develop a habit of recognizing your emotions and taking them seriously. We have to feel what we feel and interpret why we are feeling so.



Spiritually, you don't act out your emotions. You just acknowledge them. You don't deny them though. You don't push them down. You acknowledge that I'm angry, but you don't have to say, "Hey, I'm angry." That's different. But you acknowledge it, you don't deny it. That's the key.

Emotions on Spiritual Journey


We believe that God communicates with us through our emotions as our body is the temple of the Holy Spirit, that the Trinity dwells within us. If our feelings can put us more fully in touch with our inner being that means they can connect us more deeply with the God who dwells in us. Read How To Listen To Your Little Inner Voice.


We have to know that our spiritual life is important and emotions are a reality to that. Emotions are willed by God to help us be fully present to ourselves, to the world around us, and Him. We cannot ignore them. We shouldn’t.



So just start by being more aware of your emotions and letting yourself truly feel them. This means focusing on

  1. How you are feeling?

  2. Why you are feeling that way?

  3. What your feelings are telling you about yourself?

  4. What your feelings are telling you about your perception of another person or situation.

This is a simple way of becoming more in tune with your emotions, which can bring great insight.

With Meditation, you develop a kind of space within your awareness. And this space allows you to explore your emotions rather than reacting to them.
