Stop Setting Goals. Focus On This Instead

Updated: Nov 21, 2021

Life is a journey not a destination”. What does it actual mean?

We humans have a tendency to always be in worry for the future, for results of what we are doing currently. While working today, our mind remains in future. While working on a project, our mind remains stuck in the outcome.

Everything we do or don’t just has one purpose I.e. to achieve desirable results because we believe that only results can open a secure pathway for a better future. And this is the cause that we have become competitive in nature. We want to achieve more than people around has done.

Our thinking, today, forces us to believe that we are what we are, only in comparison with others. And under the influence of this, we are living our life like a competition rather than enjoying it.

We have gotten used to thinking of ourselves as more influential or inferior to others. We like conquering something always and once it accomplishes, we forced to be motivate and achieve more.

And this all is because of a system we are living in. We live in a society which has the 'lose or win' mindset. On achieving something, it rewards and punishes on failures. It is the system that has been working within us since childhood.

In schools, we feel superior if get more marks than others and useless if it is lesser. Accomplish something great and your ego will make you feel influencive and upon failing to accomplish, it will leach the fear of failure in you.

But we are forgetting one thing that our self worth is totally subjective and should never be compared to others. This is what we have never learned. Our value is unmeasurable and unredeemable.

Because this system of our society doesn't care about the process but accomplishments, it has nothing to do with the journey but destination.

But life is not a destination but a journey of failures and successes. The endless journey of different experiences, feelings, mistakes and lessons. Life is a process which encounter laughter, kisses, tears, worries, passions and all that make it meaningful.

Let me discuss about the benefits, I experienced, of focussing on the process instead of results.

1. By Focusing On The Process You Enjoy the Moments

I know that results are important as it helps you to measure your worth and gives a sense of satisfaction. But focussing on the results only, makes you miserable, it creates frustration and makes you impatient.

And who says that only result has to be enjoyed, why can't you enjoy the both, process to get that result and the final result?

2. Focusing On The Process makes you more Confident

Enjoying the moments, the process of learning and working makes you feel confident about your abilities. Now you worry less as you know that whatever the result you get you will be happy.

3. By Focusing On The Process You Willingly Take Risks

When you entirely focus on the result, you are afraid to take risk as you aimed for a desired result but focussing on the process helps you to learn, find mistakes and again learn from those mistakes and makes you think of doing the process differently which can achieve different results that can be better than the one you aimed for.

4. By Focusing On The Process You feel Satisfied

As you now enjoying the process and worry less about the result, you start to realise that achieving your goal is only upto your efforts.

It allows you to not depend on external factors to be motivated but only on your skills and abilities and thus allows you to take full control of the process.

5. Focusing On The Process Allows You to become Stress Free

When you focus on results, there always hovers a pressure of getting desired results but focussing on the process reduce the pressure. Now you understand that it’s not about winning or losing but gaining mastery in whatever you are pursuing.

A focus of control leads to empowerment, higher self-esteem and success, all of which contribute to life satisfaction.

It takes a lot of personal work to discover who we are. It is a constant journey, the aim of which is to make us more conscious about the process. It makes us realize that only experience matters in our life and not outcomes.

So, just overcome your fears, your ego and focus on this constant process of finding your true self.
