How To Get Rid Of Emotional Numbness?

Have you ever felt that you are unable to put your thoughts, your feelings into words? Or you felt like you don't have any feeling at all; No love, no anger, no compassion, no sadness, no happiness nothing is there. This is called emotional numbness. In this article, I will talk about how can you get rid of emotional numbness easily.


It is lockdown globally due to a pandemic and everyone is locked at their place. Everyone has a feeling regarding this issue, a few have fear for future, others have fear of survival without work, some are angry due to economic crisis, some are sad due to loss of life of their loved one's because of the pandemic, people stayed away from their homes are happy because they got the chance to stay at home for a longer period.


How To Get Rid Of Emotional Numbness?

And here I am. No feelings to talk about. My life seems colourless. I think I am lacking emotions. I am feeling emotional blankness.


Emotional blankness is difficult to imagine if you haven’t experienced it yourself. It feels like emptiness. I feel isolated. Sometimes I feel like I have no future or that there is no hope for the numbness to ever fade.

How does it feel to be Emotionally numb?


I have no strong feelings regarding anything, either positive or negative. It's not that I am lacking words in putting my words for my feelings but I just don't know what I am feeling.

I am at home and I am unable to make my mood for anything. No, I am not lazy. I just don't know what to talk about and thus people around me are getting bored with me.


I know that I am not alone and there are many like me but their experiences can be different from me, their feelings of numbness can vary from me.



It’s really distressing to feel nothing, you can’t tell anyone what you are going through. It really

  • Can make you feel like you are not alive

  • Is a feeling of detachment from the world

  • Gives a feeling of a stranger in one’s own family, friends circle

  • Makes one feel empty, meaningless or hopeless

  • Makes one feel unconscious to his or her daily activities

  • Creates a lack of emotions

  • Can be a serious mental roadblock that prevents you from connecting with people

  • Can make one feel losing control of their thoughts

  • Can make one mentally unstable

  • Feel being a ghost

  • It makes people feel invisible themselves while seeing others engaging in conversations and feel like there is a barrier stopping them joining the same. And if you ask them what they are feeling, they wouldn't be able to tell.

  • Some may experience it like they are watching TV and the world seems as superficial to them.



What causes Emotional numbness?


When this lockdown started I had nothing to do except those online lectures I was taking since months. I never had had such a large free time to pass and was unable to make my mind what to spend these days on.


I didn't want to waste it by watching all those trivial series programmed every week on different channels. Along with that, it was impossible to tell how much longer this lockdown will take; experience alone could solve the problem.


So, I decided to not to change my daily routine but to do all those things more consciously. Having seen my routine, my daily habits, my thoughts as an observer for a week until I got a blankness in my mind.


All emotions; negative or positive are gone. All thoughts are gone somewhere and created no void. I just feel passive, there lives a kind of peace in my mind throughout the days.


How To Get Rid Of Emotional Numbness?

This feeling of feeling nothing was created by me artificially and honestly, it was wonderful to experience as there is a silence in my mind now, I have a control over it, over my thoughts, my responses, my unconscious activities has turned into a conscious one.


But People generally see emotional numbness as a result of Depression, it has its own reasons because people (your family or friends) can’t see you quite, peacefully silent. It seems more distressing to them than to you.



How Emotional Numbness can be cured?


There is no feeling that is going to stay permanently with you and so is emotional blankness.


Though, as I told, it was really a nice experience for me to feel numb, to feel no emotions at all, it can be weird for some of you. It may seems a disease to you and believe it or not but people check it with therapists to cure it.


Nevertheless, working with a therapist can help you in this case, by making you feel more able to process your emotions.


But it’s important to check your feelings on your own.

The first step in treating emotional blankness is to recognise and attend the underlying cause. People who have been emotionally impassive for an extended time, it can be tough for them to identify their emotions. They are advised to learn to identify and express their emotions.


Identifying the cause for the feeling and trying to avoid that or reframing one’s perception of them can help you to realise your emotions.


If you’re having trouble engaging, reach out to the people who love you. They can help you to connect, and you may find comfort in letting out what you’re suffering.



My opinion on Emotional Numbness


Though it's really awful to feel nothing at the same time, it's peaceful and indulgent as it prevents anxiety.


It making me feel like I am disconnected from the rest of the world. There is a sense of isolation in my mind.



In the beginning, I was scared of the blankness that occurred to me but gradually, I am loving it. I feel like this was the feeling I always yearned for.


So, I will just recommend you to go for it.


It not only makes you feel silent physically but your soul gets peace through this.


It may seem distressing but in the end, it will be worth doing.
