We all have the energy to give. We also have the control to spend our energy. However, the majority of people waste their mental energy on random things like scrolling social media feeds, worrying about the future, ruminating past, or thinking about what people around them thinking about them and blah blah….without giving it a second thought. They invest their energy into the wrong things because they have not identified something significant which is deserving of their energy… something bigger than themselves.
Or say they don’t understand the power of energy. They don’t understand that if they don’t intentionally select a positive direction then they will surely expand it negatively.
Yes, it’s true. You have the power to intentionally select the direction of your energy. You can decide right now that you alone will determine where you direct your energy. Understanding the power of our energy, and its impact on ourselves and others is the core of self-awareness.
“No one better than ourselves can guard our energy and be intentional about how it is spent.”- Rob Bell
Though there are hundreds of ways to waste your energy yet I am writing the 4 most destructive ways you can waste your energy and how you can stop expending your limited and valuable energy.
1. Spending energy on things that don’t matter
Do you know about micro distraction? Checking your mailbox four times an hour or checking your Facebook and Instagram feeds after every half an hour as if some new thing will appear suddenly within five minutes of putting your phone down? Do you see how easy it is to waste your time? You scroll mindlessly through your news feeds and before you know it, it’s already afternoon and you are completely exhausted to show for anything now.
This is your mental energy that is going wasted on the things that have no significance in your life in the long term.
Besides, some things seem incredibly important but they don’t matter. Still, your mind frequently makes you worry about those things. As results, you devote a lot of thinking and energy to things, that don’t even matter. A good percentage of problems don’t matter after few weeks. And most don’t matter after 2-3 years.
You can save a lot of time and energy if you stop worrying about things that aren’t important. Don’t waste your energy on things that won’t make a difference in five years.
In addition to these unimportant things, you waste your energy worrying about the things that you can’t control. You resist this truth and become a control freak. You think by controlling something you can prevent bad things to happen.
That’s not true. The truth is that there are some things that you can’t control. And if you understand this, you can prevent your energy to be wasted. Go for the meaning and not momentarily happiness.
Designate specific hours and times to solely focus on the most crucial tasks, and then prioritize from there.
Stop worrying about the tasks that won’t matter in five years.
Find the tasks that do matter, and focus on those.
2. Wasting energy on people
You can easily understand how easy it is to worry about other people, closed ones or distant ones. You might have found yourself thinking about what’s happening in other people’s lives. Or you can think of the time when you tried to explain or convince someone to something that doesn’t even matter to you at current or you are holding a grudge for someone who doesn’t matter to you but said you something humiliated.
There are many ways you can waste your mental energy on people like dealing with manipulators and narcissists or sticking with a toxic relationship because you think the party will change someday or explaining someone who deliberately tries to misunderstand you etc. These activities do not good anything to you but drain you emotionally.
I know that relationships need maintenance but there is a difference between maintaining a relationship or forcing it. You should read why relationships fail. So it’s better to prioritise your wellbeing instead of indulging in the melodramas of other people.
You have much limited time, spend it with people who make you happy, understand you fully and accept you as you are.
3. Wasting Energy on doing things you don’t like
Almost all of you doing this. Even I have wasted many precious year’s of my life doing something I didn’t like to do. I was afraid of the failures of starting my own. But it took me a minute to change my decision over that when I read the book ‘Awaken the Giant within’.
Sometimes you are just afraid of nothing but the unknown. Scaring thoughts of how will you survive if you quit the job you do right now keep you surrounded. But you never think that if you are doing things that you don’t like, you are probably wasting your mental energy. Read how to choose a clear path.

“Go ahead and do what you love to do! Do nothing else. You have so little time. How can you think of wasting a moment doing something for a living you don’t like to do? What kind of living is that? That is not living, that is dying.” – Conversation with (God Book 2)
4. Spending Energy in Wanting approval or Copying Others
This is the disastrous one as everyone has their path to follow. To walk onto the other’s path or wanting others to follow your path is the worst thing you can do to yourself. You are here to spend your energies in a particular way and you waste it in copying others.
Remember to walk your path you don’t need approval, enrollment or support of anyone. It’s your path. Walk it by yourself instead of following people who don’t even care about you. Also, kill your habit of comparing your life with others as the path is walked by everyone at their own pace. Learn to be fearlessly authentic.
Kill your habits of spending energy on random things, people or whatever that seems draining your mental power. There will always be someone smarter, better looking, richer, and (seemingly) happier. Always. Focus on yourself, your mindset, your health, the state of your being, and you’ll win.
