How Important It Is To Know Your Inner Self?

Updated: Jun 1, 2021

Knowing your inner self is of utmost importance, we will discuss today how. In the previous blog I wrote that inner self is closely linked to what can’t be seen: a person’s values, beliefs, goals and motivations, feelings, intuition, personality, thoughts, emotions, fantasies, spirituality, desire and purpose. Not what you have been told by others, but what you have discovered for yourself.

How Important It Is To Know Your Inner Self?

You must be wonder why I am so focussing on Inner Self. After all what use of inner self. Well, I am so emphasizing on the importance of inner self because - If you have studied your scriptures, especially in Hinduism, you surely would have come across to the fact that how for thousands of years meditation and yoga has been used as a way to tune into the body and access and align with the inner self. Have you given a second thought, why - what was the need? Hindus believe that we, like all living beings, are the soul (or Atman in Sanskrit) and possess a body. The notion of the unchanging self and the ultimate need for self-realisation are at the root of Hindu attitudes. In west people talk about higher self. They constantly, nowadays, trying to connect with their higher self. And in Spiritual context too, our only aim is to know our soul i.e. inner self. All forms of yoga and spiritual discipline are aimed at realising the true self or inner self. Now you would be thinking, “so what? What’s special? Everyone knows that? What’s the practical use of it in modern society?”

Well, the knowledge of Inner Self takes you teach you many important issues of life, like Respect for life Shared values Tolerance, patience, forbearance Austerity and renunciation Empathy and compassion for others Wealth and poverty Transience But the most important are the two that definitely have the practical use in today’s time. These are the following; If you believe that you are this body only you become defined by a lot of your identities. It becomes natural for you to identify yourself with certain roles, like friend, partner, employee, son/daughter, and so on. Watch the video 7 benefits of knowing yourself

Meaning, you are going to spend your whole life building yourself around such identities. While making these identities, you forget to articulate your own purpose and dreams beyond what has been imposed by others. And when these identities taken away, you get totally lost. It is because you are not self-aware about who your really are from the inside.

For example, you are an employee of company. So you entrenched in this identity as an employee that you see your entire existence as employee. You will act in accordance with what’s best for the company. You will spend a lot of time doing your best for that company even if you have to forsake other things in your life. Your company becomes the central focus of your life. If you get fired from the job, you will be in a state of total loss. Your life will start spiralling out of control since the anchor you have been building your life on so far is gone. When you become overly attached to any one of your identities, you run into the risk of an identity crisis when that particular identity is removed. That’s why it’s important to find your inner self, as your real life is more than just being an employee of a company. You are the owner of your own life and you live your life for yourself. This life is one that’s defined by you, not what is defined by your roles or identities.

How Important It Is To Know Your Inner Self?

There is a very useful analogy in Hinduism – the vehicle and the driver, to make you understand in simple words The body is compared to a vehicle and the soul to the driver. A car cannot run without a driver. Similarly, the body will not work without the presence of the soul. Just as a young child may not realise that each and every car needs a driver for it to move, those without developed knowledge perceive the body but fail to see the soul within. The driver may identify with his car and even feel kinship with drivers of a similar model. Similarly feelings of friendship or enmity arise from identifying with the body. The driver develops a deep attachment to the car, so in an accident he commonly cries out “You hit me!” If the soul identifies with the body in the same way, then – preoccupied with the body’s condition – he becomes caught in a web of distress and happiness. The driver is not satisfied maintaining the car alone without looking after his own needs. Similarly, looking after the body alone cannot satisfy the soul. Although the driver is not the vehicle, he will move according to the nature of the car, namely fast, slow, etc. The same driver can get out of one vehicle and drive another. Similarly, the soul leaves one body and enters another.

There are many such teachers (wisdom of those comes from another source) among you, as always there have been, for I will not leave you without those who would show you, teach you, guide you, and remind you of these truths. Yet the greatest reminder is not anyone outside you, but the voice within you.” – God, Conversation with God

The voice here refers to your inner self that knows everything. You can read how to make clear Decision. For example, you are on a date with someone and there is something that constantly urging you to leave. While everything seems well and good, however, there is something that making you feel like something is not right with the person you are on date with and you are not able to find the logic behind that feeling. Later on you find that the person is not really a good man and that your feelings were genuine. Instead watch the video 7 benefits of knowing yourself

This was nothing but your inner or inner voice that was trying to make you alert. Like in above analogy, driver knows everything and car have to trust it, so your Inner Being like driver knows everything. You have to believe it.

It is the self that tells you whether anything is true or false, right or wrong, good or bad. It is the radar that sets the course, steers the ship, guides the journey if you but let it. It is the self which tells you right now whether the very words you are reading are words to heed or to ignore. The soul—your soul—knows all there is to know all the time. There’s nothing hidden to it, nothing unknown. When you choose the action Inner Self sponsors, then will you do more than survive, then will you do more than win, then will you do more than succeed. Then will you experience the full glory of Who You Really Are, And who you can be. Read what is Self-Awareness. You might be interested in How to overcome past memories?
