If Our Fate Is Pre-Determined, Then What’s The Need Of The Law Of Karma?

Updated: Nov 16, 2021

It often confuses people if our fate is pre-destined, then what does it mean to change our future by changing our karma. And as we have talked about in our previous blog on how to clear karma debt, we saw that most of the major events we experience in life are only the consequences of our past karma. Therefore, there arises a doubt, if everything we experience is by the law of karma, then our fate is pre-determined?

It often confuses people if our fate is pre-destined, then what does it mean to change our future by changing our karma. And as we have talked about in our previous blog on how to clear karma debt, we saw that most of the major events we experience in life are only the consequences of our past karma. Therefore, there arises a doubt, if everything we experience is by the law of karma, then our fate is pre-determined?

Let make us clear this confusion today.

Is our Destiny predetermined?

Yes, it is. Destiny means a set of events and experiences that are certain to happen in a particular person’s life. So most major events in our lives are predefined. To this universe and soul both team up to choose, where and to which family we will be born, what type of job we will be doing, what incidents and life we will be experiencing, etc. are predefined.

But, for any event to manifest, a certain set of actions are also assigned. Hence, for the manifestation of certain predefined events, the necessary actions will also have to take place. That is why certain actions are also predefined and these set of preordained actions are known as Prarabdha karma.

For example, Kams was predestined to be killed by Krishna, therefore, most of his actions were destined to be wrong and demonic in nature as he imprisoned Krishna’s parents and later met his fate. Ravan was predestined to be killed by Ram and so his actions were destined to be wrong and we know how he kidnapped Ram’s wife and met his fate.

These actions made by Kams and Ravan to meet their fate are predefined actions and known as Prarabdha karma.

Now there are some questions,

“If whatever I’ll do in my life is already predefined, then certainly I shouldn’t be held accountable for my actions.”

“After all, it’s all fated, why should my actions count? Why should they affect my karma?”

If our actions are predefined, then why we say that karma can be changed?

The questions above are valid. But the thing to remember is, not all our actions are predefined. Only those sets of actions that will give rise to predetermined events are predefined.

And in our life, we perform both kinds of actions, predefined and not defined. The actions that were not predefined are known as Kriyamana Karma (accumulating actions). It is mostly these actions that affect our karma, not the preordained ones.

Conclusion

Do not think that everything would fall in your lap without exerting any effort if it’s destined. Because we have no clue of what is predestined and what is not. In the absence of that knowledge, we should strive to do our personal best. If it is destined, we will definitely get it.
