6 Ways to find your inner self

1. Accept that you have Inner Self

There is an old saying, “You have three faces. The first face you show to the world. The second face, you show to your close friends and your family. The third face, you never show anyone — it is the truest reflection of who you are.’’

You may be working in a professional workplace for quite a long time, managing numbers and reports. It’s your external world that everybody around can see. Somewhere inside, you know, you always wanted to be a cricket player. Only your close friends and relatives know that. You shroud your third face — the most dedicated impression of yourself since you fear showing it to other people. You are afraid of being judged, misunderstood, or deserted.

You are not just one identity. There always live various personas inside you: youthful and old, genuine and fun-loving, money and bliss seekers. Attempting to suppress your inner self will not allow you to live in harmony with yourself. A part of you will always be missing, broken, demanding changes.

You can change several companies, multiple positions only to realize that none of them can give you what you were looking for — a feeling that you belong here, that it’s your passion in life.

However, some people tenaciously work without questioning the quo. If something doesn’t feel right, they work hard and if the problem remains continue they start blaming others.

Do not stress yourself to carry on with a life that does not make you feel complete. Admit that you are more than one identity. Allowing yourself to believe that you have an Inner Self will motivate you to find your path in life.

2. Know your thoughts on your life condition

Your thoughts are the key element to understand your inner self. In finding your inner self, the process of becoming aware of your thoughts is of utmost importance. Try to stop for a while and ask yourself;

• What are the things that trigger you the most?

• What makes you happy?

• What makes you sad?

• What hurts your feelings?

• What are the things you like and things that you don’t?

• What makes you cry and laugh?

• What turns you on and off?

• What are your values and principles in life?

• Does it matter what I do in this world?

• What would you do if you did not have to work every day?

Process your thoughts and allow them to fully sink in. It can tell so much about your way of living and your inner state. Your brain is reasonable. It prioritizes your pragmatic goals and desires, but not always your comfort. Deeply think and reflect.

3. Cultivate Self-awareness

Being connected to your inner self means realising deeply your values, vision and morale and principles in life, and it takes a great deal of continuous self-awareness and introspection. Even if you do not have full clarity of your inner self, likely, certain traits of it are already displayed daily through your action.

For example, you are having a conversation with your friend and amid you start thinking of an old argument you had with her that brings a feeling of resentment within you. But rather than acting on that feeling you acknowledge the feeling and start engaging in the conversation again.

This acknowledging the feeling is called being self-aware. And self-awareness brings the understanding of the inner self. Self-Awareness can be cultivated by Meditating, journaling your thoughts, and spending your time alone.

4. Start Mediation Daily

People generally look at their life as a busy running race. They have time for everything except themselves. If you have no time to stop and reflect on your past, on your feelings, and think about your future — you won’t be able to control it! Without understanding why you live your life the way it is now, you can’t make a difference in your future. Without exploring your inner personality, you can’t determine what to abandon and what to keep doing in your life.

You can only get to know your inner self better when you are all alone with yourself.

Stop distracting yourself with your phone and the overall amount of information, and create a quiet space to be with yourself. Find a cosy place to sit or go on a walk or go explore the high mountains. Such moments trigger communication with the inner self that helps you better understand the motives behind your decisions and actions.

It’s okay if you find it difficult to find your inner self as unfolding and discovering your inner self is a life long journey and need consistent practice. Don’t get frustrated with the process as you know that nothing big can happen overnight.

So, do these things daily. Don’t leave these calming soothing reconnecting routines for special occasions. Because anything is better than nothing.
